The 2009 Dawn Ghost Pinot Gris shows peach, apricot, pear and stone fruit on the nose. Ripe pineapple and lively acidity will be sensed in the mouth giving his length to the wine. The nice weight and long finish with a few grams of residual sugar make it an easy drinking and very appealing wine. This is a fresh, ripe and well balanced Pinot Gris. Enjoy it by itself or in combination with a wide range of fine food. More

Distinctly tropical flavours here with pears and melons coming through well with some herbaceous undertones. The high residual sugar creates a medium style. Needs a bit more time but promising. More

Definitely still young, this wine is deep violet in colour with a bright nose of blackcurrant and brambles with floral notes. There is ripe berry fruit in the palate with light, grainy tannins. The finish is fairly persistent and this wine should broaden out nicely in the coming months. More

St. Laurent is a highly aromatic dark-skinned grape from the same family as Pinot Noir. It originates in France but is now mainly found in Austria. It is not an easy grape to grow but it appears to be a labour of love for Judge Rock. This is the first vintage available to the public and it is promising. The aromatic characteristics of the grape are already coming through and there is some decent red berry fruit as well. As yet the tannins are somewhat coarse and grippy but we would urge you to get a bottle of two and see how it develops. Interesting. More

The Mondillo wines from Bendigo in Central Otago are creating quite a name for themselves. This latest Pinot Noir is at least as good as any of its predecessers. Yes it is very young BUT it already displays beautiful berry aromas with wonderful fruit weight, sweetness and concentration combined with bold oak and silky tannins. If this does not win multiple gold medals then we will eat our collective hats! More

Possibly the Riesling with the most potential in this tasting as it has particularly good fruit concentration in the palate. However, as yet, these citrus and kerosene characters are subdued by the tart, slightly bitter acidity. This will DEFINITELY lessen in time. More
