Harvest Hawke’s Bay at Roy’s Hill attracts big, happy crowd
Despite a patchy forecast around 3,000 wine lovers soaked up the picturesque vineyard views, wine and food at the new Harvest Hawke’s Bay venue, Roy’s Hill in the Gimblett Gravels, Hastings on Saturday.
More than 40 wineries and food producers, including a farmer’s market and gourmet workshops, were complemented by entertainment from artists including the legendary Annie Crummer, local band Sir Duke and the Nairobi Trio.
Organisers had been inundated with calls during the week regarding the weather however Carol-Ann Stubbs from Gameplan said an early shower did not dampen spirits.
“By midday the sun had appeared and the views of the vineyards, Te Mata Peak and the Ranges were spectacular.
“There was such an incredible atmosphere with Hawke’s Bay’s wines at their best.
“It was a great opportunity for people to taste wines produced throughout the region and particularly for visitors to Wine Country who were only here for a short time.
James Round from Dorset, England said the centralized venue meant he got a great feel for the Hawke’s Bay wine styles.
“We had no idea what the wines would be like and in one day we have tasted wines from more than 25 wineries and the great venue allowed us to get a feel for where all the grapes are grown – we feel like we are on top of the world!”
Wineries reported a successful day with many requiring a trip home to re-stock wine supplies.
Food producers were kept extremely busy as people flocked to marquees for gourmet lunches from winery restaurants and specialist producers.
Hawke’s Bay Seafoods were overwhelmed with long queues for grilled local crayfish, tuna kebabs, oysters and seafood salads.
Local police reported a “very pleasing day” with no arrests made.
Carol-Ann Stubbs said the positive response from those involved in the Festival meant it was likely to stay at the Roy’s Hill venue for the forseeable future.
“We’ve got a venue that shows off our stunning Wine Country and we’re keen to be a part of developing it for future generations to enjoy for years to come,” Ms Stubbs said.
