Cellaring

Wine is quite sensitive to its storage conditions and since it has the ability to improve with age its cellaring is an issue that should not be taken too lightly. Sadly this is often not the case. At the same time, it is not always very easy to store wine effectively as very few of us own a house with a cellar. Thus we suggest that you note the following points:

  • If wine is kept too hot it will deteriorate very quickly particularly if the temperature goes above 25C.
  • Conversely, if it is kept too cold, it can freeze, expand and push out the stopper/cork.
  • Should the wine be subjected to direct sunlight for a prolonged period it will be ruined.
  • All wines, but especially those with corks rather than screwcaps, should be stored horizontally.

Thus we would recommend that you purchase a wine rack and store your wine in the coolest room in the house. If you have an issue with daylight, place the wine rack in an old cupboard. The cupboard has the added benefit being lockable. It is quite possible to purchase wine racks that are very flexible in shape and size.
