Cabernet Sauvignon
Cabernet Sauvignon

The world’s most renowned grape. Great ability to produce wine that conveys the individual characteristics of a vintage. Its taste is often likened to blackcurrants and its aroma to green peppers. Cabernet Sauvignon is late ripening and must be grown somewhere warm. The area planted with this variety in New Zealand is currently falling.

Wine Description
The palate is warm and inviting, with current flavours surrounded and supported by fine tannins, which also provide persistence. The wine runs smoothly over the tongue and finishes with a tangy edge. A picture of youth.
Tasting Notes
Deep maroon in colour, the nose is full of black currents with elements of spice and custard. There are reassuring aromas of leather and cigar box which bring to mind fine old easy chairs in front of coal fires in Gentlemen-s clubs. The palate is warm and inviting, with current flavours surrounded and supported by fine tannins, which also provide persistence. The wine runs smoothly over the tongue and finishes with a tangy edge. A picture of youth.
Winemakers Notes
Good Martinborough Cabernet is not without precedent, (naming no names) provided you chose your vintages carefully. When we inherited a block of 20+ year old vines from Martinborough pioneer Stan Chifney, we decided we would only produce a serious red wine if we considered the fruit was sufficiently ripe, (see our 2000 Rosé). The warm and very dry 2001 vintage delivered the goods, and this wine is the result. Sadly most of the vines have now been removed, so this is a -one off-.
