| Winegrowing in Auckland |
Image of Babich Wines | Home to some of the oldest vineyards in New Zealand, Kumeu, Henderson and Huapai are all to the north-west of Auckland. With pockets of vineyards in and around central Auckland, these are the traditional wine making districts of the region. Auckland's soils are mainly shallow clays over hard silty-clay subsoils. The newest wine district is Clevedon, south of the city which has small areas of vines within the rolling farmland. The most popular varieties to come out of these districts are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay. Other varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon are also planted.

| About
Matua Valley Wines Ltd |
|
Matua Valley Wines is set in the delightful rolling hill country not far from Kumeu, near Auckland. The approach to the winery is through the vines of the home block and more of the company's home vineyards can be seen on the other side of the road. The cellar door lies in a park like setting with trees providing shade for picnic spots on the lawn and all the facilities needed for a relaxing afternoon are provided; petanque, croquet, children's play area and barbeque facilities. The winery offers a selection of gourmet treats to accompany your wine, should you wish to picnic within the grounds. If you would like to stay longer and explore the region further, then contact the Vineyard Cottages. Nestled on the edge of the vineyard, they offer exclusive self contained accommodation.
Matua is a category two winery and thus the range of wines is considerable. All are available for tasting except the exclusive Innovator and Ararimu ranges, depending on stock levels. The cellar door staff are very experienced, some having been with Matua for over 15 years.
The cellar door also offers a wide range of local art and craft products as well as an interesting range of souvenirs. You can enjoy a glass of wine whilst viewing the current exhibition. Groups are welcome, however bookings are essential.
